Ethereum's upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade will end the long-standing flat 21,000 gas fee for basic ETH transfers. Transfers to existing accounts will still cost 21,000 gas, but sending ETH to a new, never-before-used address will require an additional 183,600 units of 'state gas' to create and store the new account. Developers warn this breaks assumptions many wallets and blockchain services rely on, potentially causing fee miscalculations or rejected transactions, and urge service providers to update their software before the upgrade reaches mainnet after testnet testing.
